What is Affordable Care Act?
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) was designed to expand healthcare coverage to individuals who previously had none, while also providing more services at affordable rates to many Americans. The ACA also helps protect individuals with preexisting conditions by providing them with eligibility for health insurance.
- Commonly referred to many names such as “Obamacare”, “The ACA”, “Marketplace Insurance” or “healthcare.gov”.
- Has an annual open enrollment period from November 1st to December 15th to enroll in coverage with a January 1st of the following year effective date.
- In order to enroll in coverage outside of the open enrollment period, one must have what’s known as a qualifying life event. You must apply for coverage within 60 days of the event in order to be eligible for ACA benefits outside of open enrollment.
- Qualifying life events include: loss of credible coverage elsewhere, change in household (marriage, divorce, newborn), change in residence (moving to a new county or zip code), becoming a US citizen, a change in one’s Medicaid or Medicare eligibility or leaving incarceration.
- Guaranteed issued coverage means you cannot be denied coverage based on your health status, age, or income.
- Guarantees 10 Essential Health Benefits that must be covered by all plans: Doctor visits and other outpatient care, emergency services, hospitalization, maternity and newborn care, mental health and substance use disorder services, prescription drug coverage, rehabilitative and habilitative services, laboratory test and services, preventive and wellness care and basic pediatric (under the age of 19) dental and vision care.
- Advanced premium tax credits (APTC) are available to qualifying consumers based on their household size and their total annual income. These credits help reduce your monthly premium costs through healthcare.gov. Please see the tax credit and subsidy page for more information regarding who is eligible for tax credits.
